Afterward, in a wave of fury, I called my mother. She answered FaceTime with her usual big smile, and I could barely talk.<\/p>\n<p>She knew something was wrong. I told her I had just made that dreaded call for another prescription \u2014 the stuff prescribed for \u201csevere and disabling pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The receptionist who took my call said, \u201cIt\u2019s only been a few days since your last script. The 25th, actually \u2014 almost a week, but not quite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through gritted teeth and desperate composure, I replied, \u201cI have had chronic pain for five years.
